If you're a solo user on Windows looking for a modern file management experience, choose Files. Its WinUI 3 interface, tabbing, and dual panes offer a sleek upgrade from the default File Explorer. The open-source nature ensures ongoing improvements, making it ideal for those wanting an up-to-date, feature-rich explorer. However, avoid this tool if you need cross-platform support or rely heavily on advanced scripting and FTP functionalities.
On the other hand, if you're tech-savvy and prioritize privacy, go for immich. This self-hosted solution gives you complete control over your photo and video management. It performs well but requires some technical setup for hosting. It’s perfect for individuals who prefer not to use cloud services and want a high-performance platform, but steer clear if you need extensive third-party integrations or prefer an easier, cloud-based approach.
